An unforgettable trip to Sinda Island Marine Reserve

An unforgettable trip to Sinda Island Marine Reserve: Sinda Island is a protected, uninhabited island in the Indian Ocean under the Dar es Salaam Reserve (DMRS) with the IUCN category II. the reserve is located within the Kigamboni district of the Dar es Salaam region in Tanzania. The island reserve measures around 4.6 km2 consisting of inner and outer Singer Island. Inner and Outer Sinda Islands Marine Reserve was about 288.7 Hectares, and Inner and Outer Sinda Islands cover an area of 23.31 and 23.96 Hectares. South of the island is Kikwero Reef and west is the Somangila ward of Kigamboni. The island is home to endangered coconut crabs.  The Islands are home to ruins that date back to the 19th century, but Arab sailor Ibn Majid first noted the islands in 1470. This amazing reserve was gazetted in 2007 under the management of the Marine Parks and Reserve Authority (Tanzania). The coastlines of the Sinda Islands feature a blend of rocky cliffs and sandy beaches, creating a diverse natural landscape.

In terms of depth, the waters off Sinda reach a maximum of less than 10 meters.  Notably, deep waters exceeding 50 meters in depth lie just 1.8 kilomates from outer Sinda and 3.2 kilometers from Outer Makatumbe Islands. This proximity to the deep-sea seaward sides of the reserves to strong tidal currents and substantial wave action, particularly during tidal, makes these areas high-energy zones characterized by rugged rock cliffs.

The south Inner Sinda beach has the best morphology for tourism-related activities: The beach is larger and adjacent to the beach there is a flat land area large enough to build tourist facilities. Additionally, there is also a large beach on the north of Inner Sinda. The combination of beaches, land vegetation, and good coral reefs make this place suitable for combined land-sea eco-tourism.

Among the beaches in the reserve, the southern beach of Inner Sinda offers the most favorable conditions for tourism-related activities. It features a larger expanse of sand and is adjacent to a flat area situated for the development of tourist facilities. Additionally, the northern beach in Inner Sinda is also spacious. The combination of these beautiful beaches, lush vegetation, and vibrant coral reefs makes Sinda Island an attractive destination for eco-tourism that seamlessly integrates both land and sea experiences.

Sinda islands are part of a larger coral reef formation. The formation makes Sinda one of the best islands off Dar es Salaam for snorkeling, surrounded by patch reefs that harbor a variety of species such as tiny clownfish and huge moray eels. Sinda Island is also famed as a quiet spot favored by honeymooners and people just enjoying a day trip with a picnic. It is about 15km offshore but getting there is simple, with boats departing daily from Kipepeo beach and a chance to see dolphins on the way.
