Mount Kilimanjaro Crowned Africa’s Leading Mountain Park 2025 : Beginner’s Guide to Kilimanjaro Hike
If you’ve never climbed Kilimanjaro, there’s no need to worry. A Kilimanjaro hike is a beginner-friendly hike. As per our research, most expert hikers usually start hiking Kilimanjaro first before attempting the other world’s summits. That proves that Mount Kilimanjaro is the easiest of the Seven Summits.
There’s no technical climbing on Mount Kilimanjaro. To just make you feel comfortable, we tell you the world’s oldest person to hike Kilimanjaro. She is Anne Lorimor from the United States. She conquered Kilimanjaro at 89 and 37 days.
As a beginner, you need to know some key information about Kilimanjaro. Here are key tips ahead of your first Kilimanjaro climb.
Choose the best time to climb Kilimanjaro.
The best time to conquer Kilimanjaro is from June to October or January to March. Many hikers, however, rush to catch the June-October season, because it’s dry and warm. That means the ‘gold rush’ causes spikes in rates due to stiff competition. You’ll also be hiking alongside other trekkers.
If you want to avoid the crowd and higher prices, January to March is great because it’s dry and quiet. Early short rains, dropping in November through December, make the trails green and beautiful. It’s a great time to bring your camera because shots are gorgeous and there’s a great chance to spot animals at the lower down of the mountain.
Pro tip: Avoid March, April, and May on your first hike. The trails become so slippery not enough to make you enjoy it.
Pick the right Kilimanjaro trekking route.
Kilimanjaro has seven well-maintained climbing routes: Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Rongai, Shira, Umbwe, and Northern Circuit. It’s important to know which route suits you.
The most beginner-friendly hiking route is Marangu. It has a clear, well-established route, the best accommodation types (huts, other routes have campsites), and a gentle slope. The route takes 5 days to summit. But we advise you to book a 6-day or 7-day climb to increase your success rate.

Pro tip: More days spent on the mountain mean higher success rates. So, we recommend you add at least one day for acclimatization.
Train beforehand.
Prepare your body for higher altitudes if you’ve never been before. The climb is non-technical, yes, but you need a certain fitness level to complete it swiftly. Go to the gym or train, because some parts of the hike are so steep.
Pro tip: Start with the Mount Meru hike in Arusha for acclimatization. It’s a 3-4-day climb up to 4566 meters above sea level, enough to give you the feel of Kilimanjaro.
Pack the right equipment.
A Kilimanjaro hike requires certain gear and equipment. And if you have the right gear, climbing appears so easy. So, you have to know what to pack for a Kilimanjaro hike. Here’s a list of a few things to pack for your Kilimanjaro trek.
- Layered clothing (base, insulation, waterproof shell)
- Waterproof hiking boots
- Four-season sleeping bag
- Headlamp + spare batteries
- Daypack (20–30L)
- 3L water bottles or hydration bladder
- Sunscreen, lip balm & sunglasses
Pro tip: our guide will be by your side. You’ll receive a short packing list after you make an inquiry.
Pick the right climbing partner.
