Mount Kilimanjaro Day Hike Via Machame Route : The trek starts at Machame Gate, which is close to Moshi or Arusha and situated at the southern end of the mountain. The hike begins in the lush, productive montane rainforest of Kilimanjaro. The lower slopes get a lot of precipitation, as you might imagine. Trekking poles are recommended because the terrain could be slick and steep. The trees vanish as the road approaches the Shira Plateau, and low scrub in the heather zone takes their place.

The trail then ascends steeply to the volcanic plug known as Lava Tower before descending to and turning around below the South Icefield. The next hour’s journey to Uhuru Peak, the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, is quite flat. The Mweka track is followed on the fast descent.

It entails traveling 35 kilometers from Moshi to the first camp, Machame, at a height of 3000 meters, and returning over the same path the same day. Once there, you must register, pay, and receive a legal permit. The hike begins at Machame Gate at 1800, and it takes 4-5 hours in each direction to travel the 11 kilometers (22 km round trip) to Machame Camp.

TOUR ITINERARY: MOUNT KILIMANJARO MACHAME ROUTE DAY TRIP

You will be picked up from your hotel and driven the 35 kilometers (approximately 45 mi) from Moshi town to Machame Gate. You can register, pay, and receive a valid permit to begin your hiking journey at Machame Get. The hike begins at Machame Gate at 1800 and takes 4-5 hours in each direction to cover the 11 km (22 km round trip) to Machame Camp.

Attractions: The montane forest is the main draw, and it begins shortly after passing through the main gate. It is a deep woodland with several plant species, including the only flower to be found on Mount Kilimanjaro, Impatients Kilimanjaro. Colubus monkeys in black, white, and blue may also be seen.

When you arrive at the Machame camp, have your packed lunch and relax for a few minutes before commencing your descent. You will descend, check out at the park gate, and your driver guide will be waiting to transport you back to your Arusha/Moshi hotel. NOTE: The Machame and Marangu routes can be hiked in three days and two nights. The fact that this trip stays below 4000 meters makes it the perfect choice for those who are unable to reach the top.
