4 Days Mount Meru Hiking Tour
4 Days Mount Meru Hiking Tour : The second-highest mountain in Tanzania, Mount Meru, is situated about 20 kilometers east of Arusha town. Within the boundaries of Arusha National Park, the peak is located at a height of 4566 meters above sea level.
There is just one path up Meru, which can be attempted in three days, but we strongly advise tackling it in four days to allow for acclimatization. Before climbing Kilimanjaro, the majority of alpine climbers use Meru to acclimatize. Less snow has accumulated on the peak since the volcano’s outburst.
When climbing Mount Meru, unlike Kilimanjaro, you must be supervised by an armed ranger or rangers as you move through the Arusha National Park. You will appreciate the walking safari at this time as you pass herds of African buffalo, zebras, and black and white colobus monkeys, to name a few animals.
As you hike to the mountain, you can witness a variety of birds at the Momela and Ngurdoto Lakes, including pelicans and flamingos.
You will be greeted at Kilimanjaro International Airport and driven to the Kilimanjaro Wonders Hotel, a four-star B&B, where you will spend the night. Your head guide will meet you there to give you a briefing, check your equipment, and make arrangements for you to rent any necessary gear.
DETAILED ITINERARY: 4 DAYS MOUNT MERU HIKING TOUR
Day 1: Arusha (1400 m)–Miriakamba Hut (2500 m)
- Duration: 5-7 hours of hiking
You will be picked up from your hotel and taken to the Momella Gate in Arusha National Park after an early breakfast in Arusha (1400 m). While you and your guide register with Tanzania National Park (TANAPA), the porters will organize and pack your hiking gear. The ascent will then start in Arusha National Park. Walking safari-style animals, including giraffes, zebras, antelope, buffalo, and maybe elephants, can be spotted along the trail on the first day of hiking. An armed ranger hired through the National Park is essential to hike with our crew for the entirety of the hike due to the high likelihood of spotting wildlife. You will reach the Ngarenanyuki River and a stunning waterfall at the foot of Mount Meru as you continue hiking. When you get to Miriakamba Hut (2500 m), your chef will have a hot meal and water for washing dishes ready for you. Enjoy the lovely sunset and stay the night.
Day 2: Miriakamba Hut (2500 m)–Saddle Hut (3500 m)
- Duration: 3-5 hours of hiking
You’ll start climbing the arduous trail along the saddle’s ridge after breakfast. Along the way, you might spot numerous creatures! The Ash Tray and Mount Meru Crater may be seen from the route. You have the choice to hike Little Mt. Meru (3820 m) with your guide after you get to camp to help you adjust to the altitude. We’ll feed you dinner early so you have plenty of time to recuperate before your midnight summit attempt.
Day 3: Saddle Hut (3500 m), Summit Attempt (4566 m), Miriakamba Hut (2500 m)
- Duration: 10–12 hours of hiking
At 00:30, your guide will awaken you for tea and biscuits. At 1:30 a.m., you will then start your summit attempt. Starting from Rhino Point (3800 m) to Cobra Point (4350 m), the trail ascends steeply. You will scramble across a steep ridge between Meru’s inner cliffs and crater during the last hour of the walk. At sunrise, you will reach Meru’s peak (4565 m), where you will have breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru Ash Tray. Take in the vistas, then make your way down to Saddle Hut for a quick rest. The next stop on your descent is Miriakamba Hut (2500 m), where you’ll spend the night and have dinner.
Day 4: Miriakamba Hut (2500 m)–Arusha (1400 m)
- Duration: 2-3 hours of hiking
After a lengthy nap and a hearty breakfast, we’ll start our last ascent to Momella Gate. We’ll stroll through meadows and forests where it’s possible to see wildlife. Our driver will meet you at the foot of Mt. Meru and drive you back to your hotel in Moshi/Arusha.
